Morong Shores Come Alive as Over 100 Pawikan Hatchlings Return to the Sea
MORONG, BATAAN — Reaffirming their steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity, AboitizPower private limited partnerships GMEC and GNPD led a significant marine conservation activity on Wednesday, November 27, 2025. Through their flagship “Sagip PaWeCan” program, the companies spearheaded the release of over 100 sea turtle (pawikan) hatchlings at the Sitio Fuerte Pawikan Hatchery, followed by a collaborative Night Patrol along the coast.
The event underscored the active leadership of the organization in local sustainability efforts. Representing the company were Andrea Mellind Madrid, Vice-president for Corporate and Joseph Paolo Mendoza, Manager for Reputation and Stakeholder Management (RSM). They were joined in this environmental milestone by key local partners, including Morong Mayor Hon. Leila Linao-Muñoz and Raphael De Leon, Officer-in-Charge of the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO), who attended to support the companies’ conservation initiative.
The release marks a successful start to the current nesting season for the “Sagip PaWeCan” program, which is executed in coordination with the Sagip Pawikan Sitio Fuerte Association. As of November 27, the program has successfully protected 98 nests containing a total of 9,893 eggs. Since the nesting season began in September, the initiative has facilitated the safe release of 227 hatchlings into the wild, demonstrating the tangible impact of GMEC and GNPD’s investment in ecosystem preservation.
Looking ahead, GMEC and GNPD are poised to deepen their impact on Bataan’s marine life. The companies announced that coordination is currently underway to extend the program’s Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for an additional five years. This strategic move involves the continued collaboration with the DENR, the Sagip Pawikan Sitio Fuerte Association, and the Provincial Government of Bataan, ensuring that AboitizPower’s legacy of environmental care continues to thrive in Sitio Fuerte.
